Goa Forts

Goa being a Coastal state has a healthy number of Forts that served the Maritime Security by various rulers of different dynasties. The coastal forts of Goa are mainly built by the prime and common material of Red Laterite stones that are easily available in the many Stone Quarries of Goa.
The coastal belt of Goa has a continuous unbroken shoreline of around 105 plus kms. All of the western land of Goa is touched or kissed by the waves of the Arabian Sea.

Tourists and Goan Forts

For tourists visiting Goa, the few remaining forts in ruins have not much historical value, but they have a high romantic value and a higher Bollywood appeal. The famous Hindi movie, “DilChahta Hai”, meaning “My Heart Desires” introduced the wonders of Chapora Fort at Vagator to many Indians. Very scenic and romantic location as the Chapora fort is covered by Sea on two sides and by a River on one side.

Few Forts but Fabulous Locations

Most of the forts of Goa are along the Arabian Sea Coast, so always perched high up on a hill, commanding an undisturbed view of the territory of Goa. From the top of Goan forts one can get a bird’s eye view of beaches adjacent to the fort. The forts in Goa are mostly in ruins and under the able care of ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) a premier government body involved in the care taking and sometimes renovation of the ancient historical structures.
