Markets of Goa

Shopping in Goa can be memorable experience. Goa markets are true representative of the cosmopolitan culture of Goa. Shopping in Goa should be on the priority list of the visitor as one can buy some interesting stuff from these markets. It is a fascinating experience to go around and shop in the traditional markets of the Goan towns and villages.

These markets are a mirror of Goa's ethnic culture and provide a glimpse of the typical Goan way of doing business. The traditional, modern and the beachside shopping outlets must be visited to gather some memorable souvenirs exclusive to the land of Goa.

ANJUNA FLEA MARKET

This weekly Wednesday market is located bang on the shore land of Anjuna beach. The flea market is totally different from all Goan or Indian markets. The market is a sunrise to sunset market. Best time for bargains is early morning and late evenings. The flea market consists of 2000 + make shift temporary stalls.

MAPUSA FRIDAY MARKET

More popularly known as the “Friday Market” of Goa. The markets name evolved from the Konkani words, “Maap”, meaning “volumes of measure” and “Sa” meaning to “fill”. Originally this market got formed due to the Bodgeshwar Temple festival.

TIBETAN REFUGEE MARKET

This daily market is located at the football grounds of Calangute. A shaded market of around 100 stalls organized by a refugee committee. Excellent collection of Ladhaki handicrafts, thangka wall hangings, Tibetan silver jewellery, handmade paper books, and rings n things.

SATURDAY NITE BAZAAR

Between 10,000 and 20,000 people visit the Saturday Nite Bazaar right from November to April. Originally organised and started by a German entrepreneur Mr. Ingo. The new bazaar is only 4.6 km. from the old place at Arpora. A very beautiful location at Assagao with several access roads and no neighbours! Saturday night Bazaar will open in the second weekend in November 2005.

MACKIE'S NIGHT MARKET

Located amidst calm and cool surroundings of a natural pond. Market is organised on every Monday night. This was the original site where Ingo’s Saturday Nite Market began. Superb location, plenty of stalls, live performances and a Goan touch by organiser Joe lends a different ambience to this tourist market.

COLVA NITE BAZAAR

This market is held on Monday nights only. Located at football ground in Colva. Good effort to replicate North Goa’s Arpora market, but does not come close. Here one finds traders from South Goa. Close to Colva beach and next to Sukh Sagar Resort.

MARGAO MARKET

Margao market is the biggest and busiest market of Goa. It is the only Commercial market catering to the entire Salcete district (south goa) in the local language 66 is Saashest, hence the name Salcette meaning 66. Main market is the “Covered Market”. It is not at all Touristy, shop here to avoid paying inflated prices in the resorts.
